Vayu Mudra
In Sanskrit Vayu means Air, Mudra means Gesture
Vayu Mudra is a yogic hand gesture or symbol to equalize the Air element in the body.
This mudra is practised to balance the air element in the body. Air is represented in the body in the form of Vata dosha. Therefore this gesture helps in balancing Vata dosha in the body
The air element in our body is helpful in managing the different types of pain like rheumatic arthritis, sciatica, etc, and various psychological disorders. Problems concerned with the imbalance of the Air element can be easily alleviated by practising Vayu Mudra.
This mudra is also helpful in gastric disorders and relieves gas from the stomach.

How to Do Vayu Mudra
Vayu mudra is very simple and easy to do. Following are some simple steps to do this mudra–
- First of all, sit in any comfortable seating posture like Padmasana, Siddhasana, Swastikasana or Vajrasana.
- Place the hands with palm pointing upwards on the thighs or the knees.
- Close your eyes and take some deep breaths.
- Relax and calm your mind.
- Keep your spine straight.
- If you are unable to fold the legs due to joint pain, just sit on a chair and carry on with your practice.
- Fold the index fingers of your hands such that the tips of this finger touch the base of the thumb.
- Now gently press the thumbs over the index finger.
- The remaining three fingers should be kept straight.
- Initially, you may feel little pain or discomfort in doing this gesture. But with practice, you will surely master it.
- Release the mudra by relaxing the finger.
Vayu mudra can be done with both hands simultaneously.
Perform this pose for 35 minutes at a stretch every day or for 10 to 12 minutes three times a day.
It is not necessary for doing this on an empty stomach. You may also practice this mudra after two hours of a meal or even with a full stomach.
