1. Eye Exercises to Improve Eyesight

  • Warm your eyes

Rub both palms together quickly for 8-10 seconds. This friction creates mild heat. Close the eyes and gently place the left palm over the left eye and the right palm over the right eye for 30 seconds. Do not press the eyeballs with the palms. Take deep breaths. Repeat this 2-3 times.

Move Your Eyes

  • Sit in the Sukhasana (easy pose) with your legs comfortably crossed and your spine, neck, and head in a straight line. Look directly to the front at eye level and breathe normally.

Move your eyes upward to the ceiling and stay for two seconds. Look downwards and stay for two seconds. Close your eyes for two seconds. Look toward the right side, as far as your eye will see, for two seconds. Look to the left side for two seconds. Look to the front again. Close your eyes for 6-8 seconds. This completes one round. Start with 2-3 rounds and increase up to five rounds.

  • Roll your eyes.

Start by looking up and then slowly circle 10 times clockwise and 10 times anticlockwise.

  • Focus

Hold a pencil at arm’s distance, focus your eyes on it, and slowly bring the pencil closer until it’s about 6 inches away from your nose. Then slowly move it back, keeping your eyes focused on the pencil, 10 times in all.

  • Relax & Meditate

Perform these exercises regularly or at a suitable time when your eyes feel fatigued. Make sure that your hands are clean and that your mood is relaxed. Commit to daily practice and you may see better results within one month.

Parents must pay due attention to the regular diet of their children at a very early age to prevent any sort of eye weakness. The deficiency of Vitamin A is the main cause of weak eyesight in individuals. Pregnant women should take sufficient dietary supplements of Vitamin A and Folic acid to prevent weakness in the brain and the eyes.

Our eyes require a balanced diet, and multiple nutrients to function properly.

Start with these:

  • Vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential for eyesight. 
  • Antioxidants, including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, protect the macula from sun damage. You can get these antioxidants from dark green leaves, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots.
  • Foods rich in sulfur, cysteine, and lecithin (garlic, onions, shallots, and capers) help protect the lens of your eye from cataract formation.

4. Lifestyle Changes to Improve Eyesight Naturally

1. Walk barefoot on the green grass. Do regular exercise or a morning walk.

2. Avoid smoking, and excessive intake of alcohol, coffee, or tea.

3. Wear sunglasses in bright sunlight

4. Massage the scalp and feet with Mustard oil. The oil pulls heat from the eyes and promotes sound sleep. 

5. Using your thumb knuckles, massage your temples in small circles, 20 times in one direction and 20 in the other. Repeat the same actions above the mid-point of the eyebrows at the forehead, then below the eyes on both sides of the bridge of the nose.

6. Give your eyes a break once an hour during your workday. Rest your eyes for 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids.

7. Each morning upon waking, fill your mouth with water and hold for a few seconds with your eyes closed. Spit it out and repeat 2-3 times.

8. Splash your eyes and face with fresh water 10-15 times. Repeat again in the evening when you return from work or school.

  • Take fennel seeds, almonds, and rock sugar in equal amounts.
  • Grind them thoroughly and store the mixture in an airtight container.
  • Add two teaspoons or ten grams of the powder to a cup of warm milk and drink it preferably before going to bed or on an empty stomach in the morning.

 Repeat this for 40 days and see the improvement in your eyesight.

Visual acuity is used to determine visual strength. To improve visual acuity, there are several Ayurvedic remedies. One such ayurvedic remedies to improve eyesight is to consume a mixture of 

  1. Safed Mirch (White Pepper) – 50 gms
  2. Badam Giri (Almond) – 50 gms
  3. Saunf (Fennel Seed) – 50 gms
  4. Mishri (Crystallized Sugar Lumps) – 150 gms

Prepare a powder of the mixture.

Taking half spoonful of this powder twice a day (morning and evening) with warm milk will strengthen your eyesight.

In case Children object to having this, you could increase the quantity of Mishri or reduce the quantity of Safed-Mirch.

Triphala

Triphala is a potent herbal formula that consists of three fruits – Amla (Emblica Officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Each fruit is known to impact the three doshas of the body positively. Triphala has strong medicinal properties and is widely used in Ayurvedic medicines to lower toxicity levels in the body and support general health.

Moreover, Triphala is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which can protect the eyes from damage associated with oxidative stress.


Triphala Churn (following three in equal quantity) – 1 tsp

a) Amla (Gooseberry or phyllanthus emlica)

b) Harar or Haritaki ( Indian Gall Nut or Terminalia Chebula)

c) Bahera or Bibhitaki (Beleric Myrobalan)

  1. Honey – 1 tsp
  2. Melted Ghee (Butter Oil) – 1/2 tsp

Very important to note the unequal quantity of Ghee and Shahad (Equal quantity has poisonous properties).

Twice a day (Morning – Empty Stomach and Evening – Before Dinner).

Triphala Eyewash

  • Take half a teaspoon of Triphala powder and mix it in a cup of boiling water.
  • Let the solution cool down, and then strain the particles with a clean cloth.
  • Now dip a small towel in the solution and place it over your eyes.
  • Blink frequently to enable the solution to enter your eyes.

It is recommended to do it for 2-3 minutes before going to bed

Rosewater Eyewash

Rosewater is commonly used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It can be used as a soothing eye rinse as well.

Asparagus

6. Ayurvedic Medicines to Improve Eyesight

  1. Triphala

Triphala is a potent herbal formula that consists of three fruits – Amla (Emblica Officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula).

Triphala has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times as a multi-purpose treatment. In Ayurvedic medicine, Triphala is considered a Tridoshic Rasayana, meaning that it has the properties to support all three doshas.

 These qualities are believed to enhance strength and immunity and may be applied to the treatment of numerous health conditions.

Triphala is available in powder, juice, tincture, extract, capsule, or tablet form.

It is suggested to take Triphala between meals on an empty stomach for maximum absorption.

Typically, recommended doses range from 500 mg to one gram per day, though larger amounts can be used to treat symptoms like constipation

Beyond its effect on the gastrointestinal tract, Triphala is believed to relieve stress, control diabetes, promote weight loss, reduce cholesterol, alleviate inflammation, and treat a variety of bacterial and fungal infections.

Antioxidants in Triphala may slow or prevent the development of certain ageing-related diseases. One such example is cataracts.

The results suggest that Triphala may aid in the prevention of other ageing-related eye diseases, including macular degeneration.

2. Triphala Ghrit

Triphala Ghrita is an Ayurvedic medicine, in herbal ghee form. This medicine has ghee as its base. It is used for the preparatory procedures for Panchakarma and also as medicine, used mainly for eye diseases. Triphala refers to a group of three fruits – Haritaki, Vibhitaki, and Amla. The Triphala is the main ingredient in this medicine.

It is widely used as medicine and also in a preparatory procedure called snehakarma for the treatment of tumours, the early stage of cataracts, Erysipelas, Excessive discharge in women, eye pain with itching and discharge, cough, oedema, hair fall, intermittent fever, pterygium and such other eye and eyelid related diseases.
Useful in Myopia, Hypermetropia, Retinitis pigmentosa, Astigmatism, and Macular degeneration of the eye – used both for external and oral use.

Effect on Tridosha – Calms Pitta and Vata.

Indications

Recommended in Night-blind ness, Itching in Eyes, Watery discharge from eyes, Cataract, and diseases of eyelids.

Dosage

½ to 1 teaspoonful (6 to 12gm) in the morning and evening or as directed by the physician.

It may be taken itself or mixed with Triphala powder.
Triphala ghrit is also used externally in an eye procedure called Tarpana.

Triphala ghrit for Tarpana – Eye care therapy –

Externally it is used for eye treatment called Tarpana. Here, a compound around both eyes is made with the help of black gram paste. Melted Triphala ghrit is retained in the compound for a few minutes time. The patient’s eyes are immersed in the ghee medium during this procedure. the patient is asked to blink and open his eyes so that the herbal ghee components enter deep into the eyes and bring about therapeutic benefits.

1-2 drops of this ghee are put on the eyes, once or twice a day for 1 – 2 weeks to relieve eye dryness. Ghee being a very good rejuvenator and moistening agent is very soothing for the eyes. It also relieves eye irritation.
Consult your doctor before using it as eye drops.  

Side Effects

There are no known side effects of this medicine. However, it is best to use this product under medical supervision.

Method of preparation

Coarse powder of Triphala ingredients is taken and boiled in a specified quantity of water till it is reduced to its quarter part. It is then filtered to obtain Triphala decoction. Ingredients from Haritaki to Daruharidra are powdered and made into a paste by adding a sufficient quantity of water. Ghee is heated along with paste and stirred continuously while adding Triphala decoction and milk. Heating is stooped when there is a subsidence of froth, all the moisture content is evaporated, and when the paste rolled between fingers forms varti (wick). It is then packed in a tightly closed container.

3. Saptamrit Loh

Saptamrit Lauh is a primary ayurvedic medicine for eye and hair diseases. Most commonly, it is prescribed for immature cataracts, conjunctivitis, and vision impairment.

In addition to these, secondary actions are observed in the blood, stomach, intestine, and urinary bladder. It increases haemoglobin levels, reduces gas formation in the intestine, balances acid production in the stomach, improves urinary flow, and reduces oedema.

Saptamrit Lauh is also called Timirhar Lauh.

In Ayurveda, Timir Rog refers to the incipient stage of cataract, when a person just starts having blurred vision, cloudy vision, fuzzy spots, difficulty in seeing in the dark, and increased sensitivity to light as well as media screens, discomfort with bright lights and glare appearance. In such cases, this Lauh provides maximum benefits.

According to Sushruta Samhita, the matured stage is only considered for surgical treatment. In this stage, the lens becomes completely opaque. In other cases (especially in the initial stage), internal medicines (like Saptamrit Lauh) and eye drops like Netra Sudarshan Ark can be beneficial.

It is called Saptamrit lauha because it contains 7 ingredients, along with honey and ghee.

Immature Cataract

In an immature cataract, the eye lens has a clear area, and the patient experiences clouded, dim, or blurred vision and feels difficulty during nighttime. In this initial stage of cataract, Saptamrit Lauh along with Triphaladi Ghrita or Itrifal Kishneezi and Netra Sudarshan Ark is found very effective. It may reverse the changes in the lens and restore natural vision. It may also help to slow down the progress of cataracts in later stages. It is also effective in Cataracts, Diabetic retinopathy, Glaucoma, Macular degeneration, Age-related vision loss, and Optic Nerve Inflammation. . It improves eyesight and prevents further loss of vision.

Nowadays, everyone uses a computer. In some people, the continuous use of computers leads to dry eyes, eye fatigue, eye strain, headache, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to sunlight and even monitor screens. Increased sensitivity causes watering in the eyes.

In such a condition, Saptamrit Lauh along with Netra Sudarshan Ark provides maximum benefits. In addition, this combination also prevents future eye problems due to computer use.

SAPTAMRIT LAUH DOSAGE

The standard adult dosage of Saptamrit Lauh is 1000 mg along with 3 grams of Ghee and 6 grams of Honey. The maximum dosage of Saptamrita Lauha should not exceed 2000 mg (2 grams) per day.

Dose and Duration

Saptamrit Loh dosage:
250 mg – 500 mg once or twice a day before or after food or as directed by an Ayurvedic doctor. It is usually administered along with honey, ghee, and milk.
This medicine can be safely taken for a period of up to 2-4 months.

4. Moti Pishthi

Moti Pishti Bhasm is quite beneficial in improving the eye-sight of a person. It is efficient in the treatment of various eye disorders. It also helps in improving vision by providing deep nourishment to the eyes and their various parts.

Mukta (Moti) Pishti or bhasma (Pearl Calcium) is an important ayurvedic medicine. It reduces heat in the body and brings coolness to the digestive system. It balances acid secretion, so it is a crucial part of ayurvedic management of gastritis and acid dyspepsia.

Two types of formulation are available in the market.

Mukta Pishti or Moti Pishti: It is made by processing and grinding pearl fine powder with rose water.

Mukta Bhasma or Moti Bhasma: It is made by the calcination method. Heat is given to small pieces made of pre-ground fine powder of pearl.

Mukta Pishti is more beneficial as compared to Mukta Bhasma. It has more coolant action and provides good quality of highly absorbable calcium

Amalaki Rasayan is very effective in improving the eye-sight of a person. It is also useful in loss of memory, and rejuvenation, and preventing falling of hair. It is rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants.
